Deal paves way for natural gas to reach Haifa

Deal paves way for natur

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has approved the compensation mechanism for landholders along the route of the natural gas pipeline to Haifa, the Prime Minister's Office said Tuesday night. The natural gas pipeline has been held up for months because a deal could not be reached with the Druse whose land the pipeline would run through. As a result of the delay, factories and power plants in the port area were forced to continue to burn highly polluting oil instead of the much cleaner natural gas. In addition to the gas pipeline, Highway 6 and Israel Railways also needed permission to run through the area. After intensive meetings between government officials and the Druse community as well as other land owners, a deal was reached. Netanyahu ordered work on the pipeline to recommence within weeks.
