Egypt confirms Mumtaz al-Saeed as finance minister

CAIRO - Egypt's new prime minister confirmed Mumtaz al-Saeed as the country's finance minister on Tuesday, state television reported, but there was no word on a new interior minister more than two weeks after the last cabinet resigned.

The ruling military generals have brought veteran politician Kamal al-Ganzouri out of retirement to lead a new interim government but he has struggled to put together a team, compounding political uncertainty nine months after Hosni Mubarak was ousted in a popular uprising.

Saeed is a Finance Ministry veteran who was pulled out of retirement to serve as deputy to outgoing Finance Minister Hazem el-Beblawi, who was appointed in July, a ministry source said.
