Egypt PM pledges probe over protest crackdown

CAIRO - Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf apologized on Monday for a violent crackdown on demonstrators in Cairo at the weekend and said he would seek a judicial investigation, the state MENA news agency said.

"In response to demands by the people to find out the facts about what happened in Tahrir Square at dawn on Saturday, I have asked the minister of justice to take the necessary steps towards that," Essam Sharaf said in a speech that he had prepared for broadcast on Egyptian television, MENA reported.

Responding to a statement by former President Hosni Mubarak on Sunday that he and his family were not guilty of corruption, Sharaf said no no one was above the law, MENA said.
