Five killed, two injured in Cancun gunfight

MEXICO CITY - At least five people were killed and two injured in a gunfight between police and hitmen in the Mexican beach resort of Cancun on Friday, according to the Quintana Roo state government.

The shootout, in which one police officer died and another was injured, was reported around 8.44 p.m. local time and happened in a private space, the government said, not in a restaurant as some local media reported.

Cancun plays host to millions of tourists a year, but police said no foreigners or tourists were among the dead or injured.

Police, the army and marines activated security protocols and investigators are already looking into what happened, the statement said.
