Germany suspends deal prolonging nuclear plants' life

BERLIN - Germany's coalition government has suspended an agreement prolonging the life of the nation's nuclear power stations, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Monday.
Last year, her coalition agreed to extend the life of Germany's aging nuclear plants beyond their original planned closure dates. But with Japanese engineers trying avoid a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear complex, already strong opposition to the plan in Germany has stiffened.
