Herzog demands Peres 'lead the battle' against racism

Welfare Minister Yitzhak Herzog slammed Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and "racist" municipal rabbis in a speech to the Masorti Movement on Thursday.

Herzog said: "I demand that the president lead the battle for the state and Israeli democracy. The campaign needs to fight against racism, oppression of human rights groups, incitement and rabbis who promote fundamentalism, which opposes the spirit of Jewish law."

"I am sure that the masses, who fear for the future of Israeli democracy and are for pluralism and freedom of religion, will join [President Shimon] Peres," Herzog said.
