High Court rules against private prisons in Israel

High Court of Justice N

The High Court of Justice on Thursday ruled against allowing privately-run prisons to be built in Israel. Such institutions, said the court, would introduce the profit element into prisons, a development which would seriously harm the prisoners' civil rights. Thursday's ruling, written by Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch, overturns the 2004 law that first allowed private prisons to be built and operated. Until 2004, all Israeli prisons were built and run by the government.
