HRW: Jordan must stop detention without trial

An international rights group says Jordan must stop the "widespread" detention of thousands without trial each year and annul a 55-year-old law allowing the abuse. Joe Stork, deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa, told reporters Tuesday that more than 10,000 new cases of administrative detention take place in this close US ally each year. He added that a fifth of the prison population are there "not because of trial but with the signature of a governor." Prisoners with expired prison terms, female victims of family violence, men facing "tribal revenge," and foreigners without proper identification are among those held under this law, he said.
