IDF tank commander seriously hurt in Negev drill accident

An IDF soldier was seriously injured Monday night during a training exercise at the Shizafon base in the southern Negev, it was announced Wednesday.

During the drill to practice handling the Merkava 4 tank, the tank's commander hit his head on the barrel of the turret, leaving him in serious condition.

The tank commander was airlifted to Soroka University Medical Center in Beersehba where he was sedated and placed on a respirator.

The IDF spokesperson's unit said the soldier's family had been informed of the incident and that an investigation was underway into the circumstances of the event.
