Kiryat Tivon local council pleads guilty to water pollution

The Kiryat Tivon local council pleaded guilty in court last week for failing to properly maintain their sewage system. The court fined them NIS 420,000, the Environmental Protection Ministry said Monday.
From 1999-2005, the ministry found that raw sewage was being pumped into the Kishon and Tzipori streams from Kiryat Tivon's pumping station. The ministry prepared a case against them under the Water Law and the Law to Prevent Damages. The local council agreed to plead guilty and pay a fine in return for the rest of the defendants being erased from the charge sheet.
The fine will go into the Cleanliness Preservation Fund. The local council also signed an NIS 420,000 guarantee not to commit similar violations for the next three years.
