Knesset AG warns MKs not submit new Nakba bill

Knesset legal adviser Eyal Yinon wrote a letter to some 30 MKs on Monday advising them not to submit a bill they sponsored that would sanction colleges and universities that host ceremonies marking Israel's independence as a catastrophe.
Yinon wrote the MKs that such a bill was "unacceptable in democratic countries that raise the banner of free speech, political expression, and academic freedom." He said the legislation violated basic laws and was legally problematic.
The sponsors of the bill, led by Knesset Education Committee chairman Alex Miller (Israel Beiteinu), still intend to submit it. Due to a rotation agreement, Miller will be replaced as committee chairman on Wednesday by Independence MK Einat Wilf.
