Knesset panel set to approve threshold raise

The Knesset Law and Constitution Committee will convene Sunday to approve a controversial proposal by committee chairman David Rotem (Yisrael Beytenu) to raise the electoral threshold from two percent to four percent.

If passed, the proposal, would make it hard for any Arab party to get elected to the Knesset unless multiple Arab factions unite ahead of elections. The Law Committee already passed other electoral reforms, including limiting the number of ministers to 19 and no-confidence motions to once a month.

Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman intends to rush all of the electoral reform legislation through the parliament this week before the Knesset begins its extended summer recess.
