Lebanese paper releases details of alleged spy for Israel

The Lebanese, Hizbullah-allied Al-Akhbar newspaper has published details of the alleged actions of a Lebanese national arrested on suspicion of spying for Israel.

According to the paper, the man, Michel, visited Israel twice, flying via Ukraine, and his handlers in Israel reportedly gave him espionage equipment and instructions.

In his interrogation, Michel is said to have admitted to meeting his handlers in Israel more than once, and receiving money and documents from them. He also reportedly admitted to marking out targets in a Hizbullah stronghold in south Beirut.

According to Al-Akhbar, the suspect was recruited by a man named Eliyahu, whose two sons left Lebanon several years ago. Beirut was apparently unaware of the man’s Jewish identity.

The Lebanese military prosecutor has ordered that Michel’s investigation focus on determining what tasks he was entrusted with and whether he was connected to assassinations in Lebanon.
