Lebanese power broker calls for Assad's ouster

Lebanese Progressive Socialist Party leader and power broker Walid Jumblatt insisted Monday that Syrian President Bashar Assad must be forced from power in any acceptable compromise between the warring parties in Syria.
It is important to warn that "veering away from the central road map devised by the Arab League that centers on a peaceful transition of power ending the grip on Syria by the ruling clique of over four decades would be catastrophic,” Jumblatt said according to a report in the Lebanese paper The Daily Star.
Jumblatt said that a political settlement which kept Assad in power would be “an indirect recognition by the international community that overlooking the adoption of the people’s legitimate political rights is made possible by dictatorships’ repression and killing,” The Daily Star reported.
Jumblatt added that the Syrian people's sacrifice had led to a “reasonable consensus” in the international community but that the UN needed to send international monitors to guarantee that UN envoy Kofi Annan's plan is implemented. “It took over ten thousand martyrs and tens of thousands of wounded, missing, kidnapped and political prisoners for this consensus to be achieved,” he said according to the report.
