Libya scraps Gaddafi-era law forbidding political parties

Libya scrapped a law passed during the rule of deposed leader Muammar Gaddafi that made forming a political party a criminal act, Libya state news reported Wednesday.

The National Transitional Council, the government that was formed by the opposition and backed by NATO during 2011's rebellion against Gaddafi, repealed the law, which had been in effect since 1972, according to iAfrica news.

Libyan state TV announced "the canceling of the political parties law that was implemented by the despotic Gaddafi regime in order to kill political life in Libya, and impose his ideas by force on Libyans."

Gaddafi oversaw the formation of "people's committees" during his four decades of power, but felt that political parties were undemocratic.
