Palestinians, security forces scuffle over barrier

BEIT JALLA — Dozens of Palestinian protesters and their supporters have scuffled with Israeli security forces who were uprooting olive trees to extend Israel's West Bank security barrier.
The unrest took place Wednesday in Beit Jalla, near the West Bank city of Bethlehem. Palestinians say security forces were uprooting trees on 75 acres (30 hectares) of Palestinian farmland belonging to 35 families.
No injuries or arrests were reported. Security forces weren't immediately available for comment.
Israel began building the barrier in 2002 after a string of deadly Palestinian attacks. But Palestinians say the barrier is a land grab because it juts into the West Bank — territory they claim as part of a future state.
