Paramedics authorized stop hopeless resuscitations on site

From now on, a paramedic in a Magen David Adom mobile intensive care unit can declare a person (outside a hospital) dead instead of waiting for a physician to arrive on the scene - which until now often resulted in delays in burial and dishonor to the deceased.

The Health Ministry decided that an MDA paramedic is qualified to make a decision to stop resuscitation, based on guidelines, if he believes it is hopeless - and to report his decision to the authorities.

Advanced technology is to be used to determine death of the person; resuscitation may be halted with authorization of a physician specialist at a MDA branch via phone or other means of communication. The lack of unnecessary delays will also allow the mobile intensive care unit to proceed to vital lifesaving tasks instead of waiting for a doctor to arrive and sign a death certificate, the ministry said.
