PM: I will uphold separation of government, courts

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu vowed Tuesday that he would not infringe on the the country's courts, Army Radio reported.

Speaking in Eilat, Netanyahu said it was the government's responsibility "to uphold the value of separation of powers."

Also on Tuesday, Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein said that anyone seeking to undermine the courts would turn Weinstein into their "bitter, stubborn enemy."

The Knesset is deliberating two controversial bills concerning the appointment of justices to the High Court of Justice, as current president Justice Dorit Beinisch will retire in February 2012.

Weinstein said he called the prime minister over one of the bills, dubbed the "Sohlberg Bill," which would compel the Israel Bar Association to select one judicial selection committee member from each of its two main factions.

"I told him a bill like this cannot pass," Weinstein said.

Critics of the bill say the amendment, which would affect the political makeup of the selection committee, would also affect the outcome of the chosen justice.
