Recycling bins across country to increase by 55%

The number of recycling bins on the country’s streets increased by 55 percent in the past year, reaching a total of over 12,000, the ELA recycling company announced late last week. Exactly one year ago, ELA embarked on a program to expand its recycling bin base, and added 4,377 bins to the existing 8,000. It intends to bring the total to 15,000 by the end of 2011, the company said.
While the proportion of bottles recycled at the beginning of the period was only 28%, it has now risen to 38% – 3 percentage points above the company’s target goal, ELA reported. In the same period, several cities that never had recycling facilities began installing bins – Beersheba, B’nei Brak, Tiberias, Sderot and Kiryat Arba – while others doubled their numbers of bins: Herzliya, Netanya, Ashdod and Hadera.
