Report: Palestinian refugees from Syria hit with visa fees

Palestinians fleeing violence in Syria must pay a visa fee to enter Lebanon, Beirut-based Daily Star reported Friday.

United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East spokesperson Hoda Samra told the Star that although the visa fee is standard for Arab tourists, refugees are being turned away at the border because they cannot pay.

The Star quoted Ghassan Said Abdallah, general director of the Palestinian Human Rights Organization, as saying the LL25,000 buys seven days in Lebanon, but that "Palestinians must pay LL50,000 for a one-month extension."

He added that few Palestinians take this step because of the expense, the Star reported.
