Spain's Interior Ministry on Tuesday raised its terrorism alert level as a precautionary measure before taking over the European Union presidency. The ministry said in a statement the alert was raised to the medium level of 2 from low after Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba warned that Basque separatists might attempt an attack to coincide with Spain's presidency. The statement released late Tuesday said the ministry had also taken into account the need for increased vigilance following the attempted Christmas Day terrorist attack on a Detroit-bound airliner. Spain assumes the EU's rotating presidency Friday.
