State ordered to toughen

The state has five months to establish new standards for water quality, the High Court of Justice announced on Tuesday. The ruling was given in response to a petition by the Israel Union for Environmental Defense (Adam, Teva, V'din) complaining about delays in adopting an interministerial committee's recommendations on the matter from 2007. Nearly three years ago the committee recommended that the government toughen the standards on levels of pollutants allowed in the water, add tests for pollutants that weren't previously checked for, cut in half the times between tests and add essential minerals to desalinated water.
