Suspect in Gilo murder to be indicted

A homeless man suspected for murdering an 80-year-old woman from the Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo three weeks ago will be indicted this week, police announced on Tuesday. The suspect arrived a few months ago from Russia and had a history of mental illnesses, including hospitalizations in mental institutions, according to the victim’s children.
Police immediately detained the suspect, who had been living in the victim’s apartment temporarily, when they discovered the woman’s body in her apartment. He refused to cooperate with the investigation. Police believe the elderly woman was murdered about a week before her son reported her missing to the police, after she refused to continue hosting the suspect.
After the suspect allegedly murdered the elderly woman, he wrapped her body in bags and purchased several dozen kilos of salt from different stores, which he used to preserve the body while he continued to live in the apartment. He even invited someone to live in the apartment without telling them there was a body in one room by locking the door to the room. Additionally, Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben Ruby said there was clear forensic proof “erasing all doubt” that the suspect was responsible for the murder.
The suspect has been in detention since police discovered the body and was sent for psychiatric examinations. He will be indicted for murder on Thursday.
