Syrian opposition committing human rights abuses, NGO says

Armed opposition elements in Syria are committing serious human rights abuses, including kidnapping and torture, Human Rights Watch stated Monday.
In an open letter to the leaders of the Syrian opposition, the international NGO claimed that a number of attacks carried out by opposition groups in Syria were motivated by anti-Shi'ite or anti-Alawite sentiment.
The letter urged Syrian opposition to ensure that anti-Assad forces refrain from engaging in unlawful practices.
“The Syrian government’s brutal tactics cannot justify abuses by armed opposition groups,” Middle East director at Human Rights Watch Sarah Leah Whitson said in a statement posted on the organization's website.
