Train to Machu Picchu halted due to worker strike

Protests on Wednesday halted train service to the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in Peru for the second time in a week. PeruRail spokesman Guillermo Roman said Wednesday the suspension will last 24 hours as farmers participate in a national workers' strike. Rail service will resume Thursday unless there are more radical protests by some 200 Indians in Machu Picchu village at the foot of the ruins. Indians have blocked an oil pipeline and transportation across Peru's Amazon since early April to protest laws they say open their communal lands to private development. Trains were suspended for two days last week by farmers protesting a law they say could lead to water privatization.
