Turkey extends NATO Kabul command by one year

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey says it has agreed to lead the NATO peacekeeping operation in the Afghan capital for another year.
A Foreign Ministry statement issued late Monday says Turkey will extend its command of the Kabul Regional Command by a year from Nov. 1.
Turkey, which is NATO's only Muslim member, assumed the rotating command in Kabul last year, after a previous eight-month stint in 2007.
Turkey has around 1,800 troops in Kabul. No soldiers are assigned to combat missions.
In addition, Turkish officers are training Afghan security forces.
The Kabul command is designed to assist Afghanistan in its reconstruction and to help establish security there.
