UK lawmakers say Turkey must improve border security

LONDON - Turkey must improve border security before it is allowed to join the European Union, British lawmakers said on Monday, voicing concern about security risks and illegal immigration from neighboring Iraq, Iran and Syria.
The British parliament's Home Affairs Committee, in a report on the implications of Turkey joining the EU, also raised concerns about Turkish organized crime groups and drug trafficking, but said greater EU-Turkish cooperation on fighting crime could outweigh any risks from Turkish membership.
Turkey began formal talks on joining the EU in 2005 and has become frustrated by the slow progress made so far.
