UN chief hopes for Cyprus breakthrough

UNITED NATIONS — Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met the rival leaders of divided Cyprus Thursday and said they recognize the need to move more quickly and decisively to reach agreement on a plan to reunify the Mediterranean island.

Ban invited Greek Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu to UN headquarters to try to prevent a collapse of more than two years of negotiations. Failure could cement the island's partition and derail Turkey's hopes for membership in the European Union.

"I hope today's meeting has helped to restore momentum to the process," the UN chief told reporters after meeting behind closed doors for about 2 1/2 hours with the two leaders, who flanked him.
