UN: Over 10,000 Syrians have escaped to Turkey

The United Nations on Monday stated that over 10,000 people have fled Syria amid a violent government crackdown taking place on anti-regime protesters in the country, an official statement said.
A top UN humanitarian official voiced "deep concern" over violence in Syria, which has reportedly claimed 1,200 lives, and urged Syrian President Bashar Assad's government to "refrain from using force against peaceful demonstrators."
“It is important that we find out exactly what is happening in Syria so that we can provide help if required,” Valerie Amos, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, was quoted as saying in the statement. “I hope that the Government of Syria will allow an independent assessment to be conducted,” she said.
