US: Iran helping Syria put down anti-gov't protests

WASHINGTON - There are signs Iran is helping Syria put down anti-government protests with advice on monitoring and blocking Internet use, training security forces and supplying riot gear, a US official said on Thursday.
The US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said there are "very strong indications" that Iran is helping the Syrians crack down on protesters with advice on how to track or block their Internet use, training on how to put down demonstrations and the supply of riot control equipment.
"We believe that there is credible information that Iran isassisting Syria. I am not going to get into details about thatmaterial assistance, but it's of real concern to us," Tonertold reporters at his daily briefing.
