US updates Syria travel warning, urges citizens to 'depart immediately'

The US State Department on Wednesday updated is travel warning on Syria, advising all of its citizens against travel to the country and urging American citizens already there to "depart immediately."

The upgraded travel warning superseded the last one issued by the State Department on August 27, 2015.

The State Department said it issued the advisory "to remind US citizens that the security situation remains dangerous and unpredictable as violent conflict between government and armed anti-government groups continues throughout the country, along with an increased risk of kidnappings, bombings, murder, and terrorism."
