US watching out for Israel amid Egyptian turmoil

WASHINGTON  — A senior State Department official said Thursday that the United States will ensure that political changes on Israel's borders do not create new dangers for the longtime US ally.
Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg testified at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Egypt and Lebanon. Steinberg said in prepared testimony that the one constant amid the turmoil in the region was the United States' unwavering support for Israel.
He also sought to quell talk of divisions within the administration over Egypt. He said that the US has said publicly and privately that a peaceful and orderly transition to democracy must begin without delay.
