Rabbis should not be interfering with IDF matters, Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilna'i said in a closed-door meeting Thursday. Vilna'i added that he hoped hesder rabbis would not allow "a few stray weeds to weaken the relationship with the IDF." Dozens of hesder rabbis and teachers from across Israel signed off on a letter Thursday that, among other things, stated that "loyalty to God takes precedence over all other loyalties, including the army." Meanwhile, rabbis prepared to meet on Sunday to discuss Defense Minister Ehud Barak's decision to cut ties with the Har Bracha Yeshiva, whose head, Rabbi Eliezer Melamed, had expressed support for soldiers' refusal to take part in the evacuation of Jewish settlements.
