Government general hospitals are suffering from delayed payments by private insurance companies for treating road accident victims, according to Health Ministry accountant Yossi Itzkovich.
At the annual meeting of hospital accountants held at Rambam Medical Center recently, Itzkovich said unpaid debts by insurance companies had reached their highest-ever at more than NIS 100 million.
The biggest share of the money is owed to Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer (20 percent) and Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (18%). Others due funds are Wolfson in Holon; Assaf Harofeh in Tzrifin; Bnei Zion in Haifa; Barzilai in Ashkelon; and Western Galilee Government Hospital in Nahariya.
The payment delays are due to bureaucratic snags in the relationship between the insurance companies and the hospitals, Itzkovich said.
The shortage of funds has made the medical centers' ongoing functioning very difficult, he complained.
