I've been home in the US for about one month now. It was wonderful to see my family and friends and to visit favorite hotspots like New York City and Philadelphia. I wasn't so keen on returning to New Jersey, though. I'm a city girl and returning home to boring routine of living in suburbia was not something I was looking forward to.
I live at home. I don't have a cell phone. I don't have a job. I do have a life, but completely different from what it used to be in Israel. Yes, I am more comfortable and more confident here-but am I that much happier? I'm not so sure yet.
Things have certainly changed since I left. A few friends got married. A few friends got engaged. And many moved away after college and came back full-fledged adults. I, too, became a full-fledged adult. When I came back, I felt I was more mature and more independent. I knew I could only depend on myself and no one else.
Though friends went out of their way to welcome me home when I returned, I don't get to see everybody the way I used to and that hurts. But this is the choice I made when I decided to leave everyone and everything behind for one year somewhere else. It's not like we didn't keep in contact, we did send emails and make phone calls, but had I had the chance to do it over again I think I would keep in contact with people more.
