Greek pro-Palestinian protest groups have planned a “Day of Action” against Israeli tourists for this coming Sunday, August 10.
March To Gaza Greece, Palestinian Community Greece, and BDS Greece have been collectively advertising the planned protest on August 10 in an attempt to drum up support.
“Genocide supporters are not welcome,” one post reads. “We will prevent their presence in Volos, Piraeus, Santorini, Mykonos, and anywhere else they choose to vacation from their genocidal acts.”
“As millions of tourists flood the country, let’s make our presence visible and loud. Let’s turn islands, beaches, alleys, mountaintops, and shelters into places of solidarity, not relaxation for murdering IDF soldiers. The organized effort to make Greece a ‘haven’ for those who participate or support the slaughter in Palestine will not pass!”
The slogan of the August 10 action is “Not in our land, not in our name.”
Protests set in 30 different locations
According to maps posted to social media, protests are planned in 30 different locations, including on the Greek mainland and throughout the islands, though the groups have said that new locations are being added all the time.
One particular event is set to take place at 11 a.m. at Havania Beach in Crete.
It is described as an “event of remembrance, art, and resistance,” which will involve a “performance in solidarity with the struggling people of Palestine.”
The groups previously came together to prevent Israeli tourists from disembarking a cruise ship that docked on the island of Syros on July 22.
The Israeli cruise ship, the Crown Iris, was unable to dock at Syros because of the protest action. It did successfully dock at the ports of Rhodes and Agios Nikolaos but only with a riot police escort.
The cruise ship incident followed a spate of incidents involving Jews or Israelis in Greece over the last few weeks, including an alleged attack against Israeli teens in Rhodes and an attack on King David Burger, a kosher eatery in Athens.
