A knife-wielding man threatened and hurled antisemitic insults at Jewish community members near a Paris suburb synagogue on Friday evening, Neuilly-sur-Seine Mayor Jean Christophe Fromantin said in a statement.

There were no reported injuries, assured the mayor. The 40-year-old man was arrested by police and was in custody at the time of the statement.

Paris Police Prefect Laurent Nunez said Saturday on social media that an investigation into the incident was underway.

Increased security in Jewish areas

The police presence and security would be increased in the area's Jewish sites in the coming days, Nunez promised on X, adding that he shared in the outrage about the incident.

Fromantin said in his statement that "we must remain alert and mobilize all resources in the face of the rise of antisemitism."

The incident came several weeks after two Muslim Arab teenagers were arrested in Paris on suspicion of planning terrorist attacks against synagogues and the Eiffel Tower, according to a Le Figaro report.
