During periods of ongoing tension, like those experienced by many in Israel in recent years, the effect does not remain only at the level of internal feeling. The entire body responds to stress, and the skin, the largest organ in the body, is directly affected by it.

Many people report that during stressful periods their skin becomes more sensitive, dry or reddish. Others develop pimples, rashes or a worsening of existing conditions such as acne, eczema or rosacea.

The connection between mental stress and skin condition is well known. Our skin feels almost everything that happens in the body and mind. When we are under ongoing stress, the body’s systems enter a state of alertness, and this may also affect the functioning of the skin’s protective barrier.

What happens to the skin during stress

When the body is under pressure, levels of stress hormones rise. This situation may lead to changes in skin function, including a reduced ability to maintain natural moisture, increased sensitivity to external irritants and worsening inflammatory processes.
The result can be expressed in a variety of symptoms: Dryness, redness, a sensation of itching, the appearance of pimples and sometimes also a tired and lackluster appearance.

Therefore, during tense periods it is important to slightly adjust the skincare routine, and to choose a calmer and gentler approach.

Back to basics: Gentle cleansing

When the skin is especially sensitive, it is better to avoid aggressive or overly foaming cleansing products.

It is recommended to choose a gentle facial cleanser that contains soothing ingredients such as chamomile, aloe vera or oatmeal. Gentle cleansing once or twice a day is completely sufficient, and there is no need to scrub the skin or use strong cleansing brushes.

A gentle approach allows the skin to maintain its natural protective layer.

Nourishing the skin and restoring the protective barrier

The skin has a natural protective barrier whose role is to maintain moisture and protect against external factors. During periods of stress this barrier may weaken.

To strengthen it, it is recommended to use creams and serums that contain strengthening ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, natural oils or peptides.

These ingredients may help soothe the skin, restore moisture and improve its overall texture.

Facial massage for relaxation

Precisely when the skin reacts with sensitivity, it is sometimes advisable to reduce the number of products. Retinol, active acids or strong peeling treatments may be excellent in a regular routine, but during periods of stress it is better to give the skin some rest. A more minimalist approach may allow the skin to calm down and rebalance.

A gentle massage of the facial skin may be a simple way to calm both the skin and the body.

It is possible to use a facial roller, a gua sha tool or simply the fingertips in gentle circular motions. The massage may help reduce puffiness, improve blood circulation and provide a general sense of calm.

Some people choose to incorporate soothing essential oils such as lavender or chamomile, of course after checking that the skin responds well to them.

When the body calms down, the skin also changes

The skin is not disconnected from the rest of the body. When stress levels decrease, the skin’s response may also improve.

Activities such as a daily walk, yoga, breathing exercises or even moments of real rest can positively affect the entire body.

When the nervous system calms down, the body gradually returns to balance, and sometimes the skin responds accordingly.

A natural soothing mask for the skin
Those who prefer home solutions can prepare a simple mask intended to soothe the skin during sensitive periods.
Ingredients:
• One tablespoon of natural honey
• Two tablespoons of yogurt preferably goat yogurt or probiotic yogurt
• One teaspoon of finely ground oatmeal

Preparation and use:
• Mix all the ingredients in a small bowl until a uniform mixture is obtained.
• Apply to clean facial skin and leave for about ten to fifteen minutes.
• Afterwards rinse with lukewarm water and dry gently.

It is possible to complete the treatment with a soothing moisturizer or a gentle serum.

The combination of these ingredients may help soothe the skin and provide natural moisture during periods when it is especially sensitive.

Ultimately, the skin often reflects what is happening in the body and mind. When we learn to calm ourselves, slow the pace and choose gentler skincare, the skin may also respond in a calmer and healthier way.
