Nine people were killed during an active-shooter incident in the Tumbler Ridge municipality of British Columbia, Canada, Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced in a Tuesday statement.
RCMP "does not believe there are any outstanding suspects or ongoing threat to the public," the statement added.
According to the statement, the RCMP received a report of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on Tuesday afternoon.
During an investigation of the grounds, police found seven deceased individuals within the school, including six victims and one person suspected of being the shooter.
One additional victim died while being transported to a nearby hospital.
The suspected shooter was found with a "self‑inflicted injury," which police determined to be the cause of death.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police have identified a secondary location believed to be connected to the incident, where two additional victims were located deceased in a residence," the statement added.
Two people have been airlifted to the hospital with "serious or life‑threatening injuries" for further medical treatment, and 25 others are being treated at a local medical center, RCMP said.
Police officers are also conducting sweeps of additional nearby residences and properties to determine "whether anyone else may be injured or otherwise linked to today’s events."
According to the Canadian public broadcaster, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), police have not yet identified the suspected perpetrator of the shooting, but described her as "a woman in a dress with brown hair."
Canadian officials send condolences to victims, families
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that he was devastated by the shootings, sending his "prayers and deepest condolences" to "the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence" in a statement on X/Twitter following the incident.
Carney expressed gratitude for "the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens."
According to a Reuters report, Carney additionally cancelled a planned trip to a security conference in Germany after the shooting.
“This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation, and the swift cooperation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in our response,” Superintendent Ken Floyd, North District Commander, said.
“Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident. This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the cooperation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation.”
David Eby, the Premier of British Columbia, pledged his government's support to all Tumbler Ridge community members as all impacted by the shooting "try to come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy" in a post on X/Twitter.
"Our hearts are in Tumbler Ridge tonight with the families of those who have lost loved ones," Eby added.
British Columbia Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Nina Krieger also sent her condolences to those affected in a post to X/Twitter.
"Today’s devastating events are sending shockwaves through the community and the entire province. My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the entire Tumbler Ridge community," she wrote.
"We will deploy every resource to support the investigation and the people of Tumbler Ridge."
