British politician: Suspend arms exports to Israel

Menzies Campbell, the leader of Britain's opposition Liberal Democrats on Monday asked Prime Minister Tony Blair to suspend arms exports to Israel after fighting that has killed hundreds of civilians. "[UN Secretary-General] Kofi Annan has said attacks in Lebanon are inflicting collective punishment on the Lebanese people and the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator has described attacks on Beirut as a violation of humanitarian law," Campbell wrote. "The Government must now comply with its own arms export rules and institute an immediate suspension of all UK arms exports to Israel," he added. There was no immediate response from Blair's office.
