Car bomb in Iraq kills 12 police officers

A car bomb and shooting attack Sunday morning on the police headquarters in the town of Samarra killed 12 Iraqi police officers and wounded 11 others, the US military reported. Among the victims of the brazen attack, which struck the volatile city in the Sunni heartland 95 kilometers north of Baghdad, was the police chief, local police said. US soldiers racing to the headquarters to aid the police also came under attack by small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades that left two soldiers wounded, the military said.
