Venezuela is preparing to launch its first satellite from China, a move that President Hugo Chavez says will boost his country's independence.
Chavez says the satellite will be launched into orbit on Nov. 1, and will provide a coverage area of several Latin American nations.
He thanked China for supporting a project that he says will make Venezuela self-sufficient in television, Internet and other communication transmissions.
The satellite will be named after regional independence hero Simon Bolivar.
