Coup leaders say they plan to hold elections in Mauritania as soon as possible.
They did not give a date for the presidential elections in the statement read on national TV on Thursday but said the elections will be free and transparent.
They say the country will be governed by an 11-member council of military commanders in the interim.
Soldiers took Mauritania's president hostage on early on Wednesday and announced that a coup had taken place, in a blow to the nation's nascent democracy.
