Fiji's military ruler restores powers to president

Fiji's military ruler Frank Bainimarama on Thursday restored executive authority to the nation's ousted President Ratu Josefa Iloilo. Bainimarama made the announcement during a national address at the military headquarters in the capital, Suva, but did not elaborate on the reasons for his decision. The military commander appointed himself acting president when he overthrew the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase on Dec. 5, but his removal of Iloilo met with resistance from Fiji's hugely influential Great Council of Chiefs.
