Foreign Ministry looks into reports Mauritania recalled its ambassador
Country's Foreign Ministry says ambassador ordered to return "for consultations."

Israel was looking into - but could not confirm - reports that Mauritania is recalling its ambassador from Israel in response to the Gaza operation.
Mauritania's Foreign Ministry spokesman Babah Ould Sidi Abdalla said Monday that Mauritania's ambassador in Tel Aviv had been ordered to return "for consultations." Abdalla declined to comment further and did not explicitly say the move was made in protest.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said Mauritania's ambassador left Israel but gave no explanation as to the reason why. "We are looking into the matter," Palmor said.
If the reports turn out to be true, it would be the first ambassador to be recalled from Israel because of the fighting.
On Sunday, security forces fired tear gas to disperse people in Mauritania's capital who were protesting the incursion into Gaza.
At least 10 civilians and several riot police were injured and hospitalized, according to an Associated Press reporter at the scene.
Mauritania is one of only three Arab League countries, along with Egypt and Jordan, to have diplomatic ties with Israel.
