France remains opposed to Turkey joining EU

President Nicolas Sarkozy is holding firm in opposing European Union membership for Turkey despite a US plea for the mostly Muslim country to be included in the bloc. Sarkozy said his longtime position against Turkey's entry "has not changed and will not change" after US President Barack Obama called for the 27-nation bloc to grant Turkey membership as a positive signal to the Muslim world. Sarkozy was speaking in a television interview broadcast Sunday. EU leaders are meeting with Obama in Prague.
