France plans to ask the UN Security Council to approve its six-point plan for ending hostilities between Georgia and Russia before the end of the week, diplomats said Wednesday.
The French-drafted Security Council proposal is still being worked out, but is largely based on an earlier text France rolled out just before Georgia and Russia agreed to a cease-fire plan brokered by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
Several council diplomats said the French draft resolution likely be put before the council by the end of the week. In Georgia, Russian troops and paramilitaries entered the strategic Georgian city of Gori, apparently violating the truce.
