France will not extradite Georgia's ex-defense minister

A Paris appeals court decided on Wednesday against extraditing Georgia's former defense minister to his home country despite a conviction for extortion. The court ruled against an extradition request brought by Georgian authorities against Irakli Okruashvili. France granted Okruashvili political asylum in April after he said he would be killed if extradited. A Georgian court this year convicted Okruashvili of extortion and sentenced him to 11 years in prison. His defenders said the charges were politically motivated. Okruashvili was once an ally of Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili but became a prominent critic after being dismissed in 2006.
