German MP sees risk of Saddam becoming martyr

Germany's foreign minister voiced concern that the circumstances of Saddam Hussein's execution could help turn him into a martyr for supporters, according to comments released Saturday. "The effects of Saddam's execution on the situation in Iraq cannot yet entirely be foreseen," the Bild am Sonntag newspaper quoted Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier as saying in an interview to be published Sunday. "The risk certainly exists that this execution on an Islamic holiday and its media circulation create the basis for making Saddam Hussein into a martyr for his supporters," he added, according to the report. "The many visits to his grave give us the first indications of this. But it is not clear yet whether there will be a further escalation of violence in Iraq."
