House to vote to pay for war, bring US troops home

The leader of the House of Representatives, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said the chamber will vote as early as Friday on legislation that would pay $50 billion (€35 billion) for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but require that President George W. Bush start bringing troops home. The money is about a quarter of the $196 billion (€133.6 billion) requested by Bush. It would pay for about four months of combat in Iraq, Pelosi told reporters on Thursday. "This is not a blank check for the president," she said at a news conference.
